After the peak level reached in 2019, world tourism and Turkish tourism experienced a decline due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic. According to the data of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), global tourism volume developed beyond expectations in 2023 with the removal of restrictions, reaching 88% of the record level reached in 2019 in terms of the number of tourists.
It is estimated that global tourism will continue to recover in the 2023-2025 period and reach 2019 levels, and approximately 2 billion people will participate in global tourism and travel activities in 2030.
According to UNWTO data, a total of 1 billion 286 million people participated in international tourism activities in 2023. The number of international tourists is expected to exceed 1.4 billion people in 2024.
According to UNWTO data, the total income from international tourism in 2022 was 1.1 trillion US dollars. Global tourism revenues are expected to reach 1.3 trillion US dollars in 2023.

France is one of the countries that receive the most tourists in the world. Other major tourism countries in the world are countries such as Spain, the United States, China and Italy. Turkey, which has successfully implemented the Safe Tourism program against the Covid-19 epidemic in 2021 and the Sustainable Tourism Program since 2022, has risen to third place in the world rankings.
According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), in 2019, when global tourism peaked, the total direct and indirect employment provided by the tourism sector worldwide reached 333 million. According to these data, the sector contributed to one tenth of the total employment in the world as of 2019. Due to the Covid-19 epidemic, 62 million people working in the tourism sector worldwide became unemployed in 2020. In 2021, 18.2 million people regained employment opportunities. According to these data, the tourism sector contributed directly or indirectly to the employment of a total of 289 million people in 2021. WTTC estimates that the total employment contribution made by the travel and tourism sector will increase to 410 million people by 2030.
In terms of tourism revenues, 2019 will be left behind in 2022, reaching a historical record of 46 billion US dollars, and in 2023, the income will increase to 54.3 billion US dollars.
While Turkey's market share in terms of the number of tourists increased to 4.4% in 2023, its market share in terms of tourism income was 4.27%.
The number of tourists visiting Turkey was 56.7 million people in 2023.
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism has set a target of 82 million visitors and 100 billion US dollars of income from tourism in 2028.
The average spending of visitors in Turkey has been showing an upward trend since 2018.
It is aimed that the expenditure per tourist will increase by approximately 3 percent on average in the 2023-2028 period, reaching 1215 USD.
The average daily expenditure per tourist is targeted to increase from 97.9 USD in 2023 to 129.3 USD in 2028.
